Little known Black History Fact: New Harvard Black History Center

    Harvard University just announced the launch of the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research. Within the new 15 million dollar center, there will be the Afro-Latin American Research Institute, the History Design Studio, the Program for the Study of Race and Gender in Science and Medicine, and the Ethelbert Cooper Gallery of African and African American Art.

    The new facility will also hold the W.E.B. DuBois Research Institute, the Hip-hop Archive and Research Institute, the Image of the Black Archive and Library and the DuBois Review along with the Transition Magazine, the Neil L. and Angelica Zander Rudenstine Gallery, and the Hutchins Family Library. Professor Henry Louis “Skip” Gates Jr., will be the founding director of the Hutchins Center. Gates has served as director of the Du Bois Institute since 1991.

    The Hutchins center will launch on October 2nd with a ceremony awarding the W.E.B. Du Bois Medal, the to six leaders across government, the arts, and athletics. Among them are President Obama’s senior Advisor, Valerie Jarrett and U.S. Representative John Lewis.

    The Hutchins Center for African and African American Research was made possible through a gift from the Hutchins Family Foundation, which was endowed by Glenn Hutchins, a Harvard graduate who co-founded technology investment company Sliver Lake.
